From the Executive Director

Earlier this month, staff was thrilled to host a group of students and Michigan section members visiting Headquarters and then touring Michigan State University’s Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center. The trip was choreographed by Michigan Section Chair Dave Isaacs and supported by additional section members Paula Steiner, John Seppanen, and Nick Tipper. Seven MSU undergraduate students and one graduate student driver departed East Lansing, while seven Purdue undergraduate students had already departed West Lafayette, and both groups arrived at Headquarters within minutes of each other! It was fantastic to have Hudson Schneider, International Student Branch president 2024–2025, join the Purdue delegation. All enjoyed the cornhole-mixer welcome, a pizza lunch, and a presentation about ASABE. The group then departed for the Research Center. If you, or a group, would like to visit Headquarters, just let us know.
New Foundation President Maury Salz has inspired past Society presidents to give, and as a result this fall season of giving/Giving Tuesday will have the most money available to date for matching donors’ contributions. It's billed the Past Presidents Challenge 2024, and I encourage you to reflect on what Foundation program or fund speaks to you and consider making a contribution, which will then be doubled!

Making Connections at FIRA USA
Volunteers from our California/Nevada section last week led an ASABE delegation at FIRA-USA, an industry event focused on robotics and autonomy in agriculture. Held in Woodland, California, FIRA provided an opportunity to demonstrate the Society's leadership in supporting emerging autonomous technology. Among the highlights of the event was a panel discussion featuring ASABE members Adam Barlow and Austin Gellings, who spoke on the importance of standards in the industry.

Taking the ASABE Message to FFA
Also last week, members of the Kansas State University quarter-scale tractor team joined Christina Tucker, University of Illinois, and Josh Jackson, University of Kentucky, in Indianapolis to host a booth at the 2024 FFA Expo.
Demonstrating the breadth of the profession, K-State team members talked about their tractor and their experience with the ASABE's quarter-scale competition, while Tucker and Jackson used soil sensors and machine vision to illustrate the ways in which the profession is leading the digital ag transformation.

|
The annual FFA Expo presents a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of careers in agricultural and biological engineering and technology by engaging one-on-one with students, parents, educators, and FFA chapter advisors. This year's event drew more than 70,000 attendees.

Branding Tools Available for Sections, Communities
Great brands are built on consistency, and to facilitate consistency for those who manage communications on behalf of their sections and communities, we've created a handy Section Brand Guide. This abridged version of the comprehensive ASABE Brand Style Guide provides everything you need to support clear, robust, and consistent messaging.
Like the comprehensive guide, the section style guide contains core messaging and specifications for visual identity (fonts, logos, color palette, etc). Unlike the comprehensive guide, it also provides links to professionally designed templates, tools, and imagery, housed on the platform Canva, which you can use to set up a section logo, event flyers, social media posts, and more.
Both the comprehensive style guide and the section guide can be found on the branding page of the ASABE website, along with the previously released University Chapter Brand Guide.
These tools are living portfolios. Your suggestions and questions are encouraged. Contact Dolores Landeck for more information.

David Arthur "Art" Clever
David Arthur “Art” Clever, 81, passed away October 3, 2024, at The Villages, Florida.
Clever was born on February 24, 1943, in Columbus, Ohio, to A. Franklin Clever and F. Jean Cossum.
Clever retired from John Deere and Company in 2012 after 42 years of service, beginning as a design engineer in 1967 after graduating from The Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering. From 1964 to 1970, beginning in college and into his early career, he also served in the United States Air Force and the Air National Guard both in Ohio and Illinois. In 1974, John Deere moved him to the Technical Center as a standards engineer, beginning what was to become a distinguished career as a globally recognized expert in the field of mechanical fasteners.
Clever chaired national and international committees responsible for standards development and earned much respect and many accolades along the way. In 2007, he received the prestigious ASME Dedicated Service Award for his outstanding performance and leadership. He was especially proud of his elevation to a Fellow in the Standards Engineers Society. Over his career, he demonstrated the importance of maintaining an open mind and continuous education. He earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering in 1998 via correspondence and was awarded an honorary PhD in 2006.
Clever was a 57-year member of ASABE.
